Appropriate use

Use the placemat beneath warm plates, bowls, and serving dishes that are within the stated temperature limit.

What to avoid

Do not place cookware directly from a hotter oven or stovetop on the placemat. When you do not know the surface temperature, use a trivet or another product designed for higher heat.

After use

Allow the placemat and dishes to cool before cleaning. Wipe with a damp cloth or soft sponge, rinse gently when needed, and air-dry fully.

What 176°F / 80°C means in practice

176°F is warm enough for plates, bowls and serving dishes that have been sitting out for serving, but lower than a pan or casserole straight from the oven or stovetop. If you are unsure how hot a dish is, put it on a trivet first.

How to read a heat claim on any placemat

Words such as heat-resistant, insulated or table-protective do not tell you the supported temperature, how long the heat can stay in place or what the mat is meant to hold. Look for a stated limit and the intended use, as on Rumiloo product pages. Temperature ratings belong to one manufacturer’s products and do not transfer between brands: Chilewich’s Wave guidance, for example, advises protecting its placemats from heat at 200°F and above and using a trivet for hot cookware. That is Chilewich’s rule for its own mats, not a rating for Rumiloo placemats.

Before relying on any placemat with hot dishes, check:

  • The stated maximum temperature.
  • Whether the mat is intended for warm plates, serving pieces or hot cookware.
  • Any time, surface or material restrictions.
  • Whether the tabletop manufacturer requires separate protection.

A runner or tablecloth underneath is another product with its own instructions. Layering does not add heat protection. Do not test an unclear heat claim at home; ask the seller or use a trivet.
